Make Prayer Your Top Priority

“In their hearts, humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”
Proverbs 16:9

Most of us have a written or mental “to-do” list, things we need to do, want to do, or hope to do “if we ever get around to it.” Maybe you even have a “bucket list” of places to travel, people to meet, and sights to see.

We make our list and charge ahead, full speed! But Proverbs reminds us that while we plan, it is the Lord who establishes our steps. The question is: Are you counting on God to direct your path? Are you spending time with Him in prayer? Would you recognize His voice if He spoke to you?

Mark 1:35 tells us, “In the morning, long before sunrise, Jesus went to a place where He could be alone to pray.” No distractions. Just Jesus and His Father.

I’ll be honest, early mornings aren’t my favorite! My cat Pearl wakes me every day around 4:45 or 5:00 AM, without fail, pawing at my face until I get up. I sometimes wonder if God uses Pearl to nudge me to meet with Him before the busyness of the day begins, while the world is still quiet.

Jesus understood the power of prayer.

“But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” Luke 5:16

Where is it lonely today? Screens, messages, and constant noise surround us. We scroll, we click, we post, yet we rarely pause to pray. Our phones have become our “go-to,” while prayer has slipped down our list of priorities.

But it’s never too late to make a new list, one that begins with God. Start each morning in His Word and in prayer, before the world presses in.

God Cares for You

Who better to partner with than God Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, the One who loves and cares for you?

“Since God cares for you, let Him carry all your burdens and worries.” 1 Peter 5:7

Seek His counsel and companionship. His Word is always available day or night, rain or shine, and you don’t even have to leave your home. On bended knee or not, seek Him. He hears your prayers, knows your pain, and stands ready to comfort you in every trial.

Nothing is too hard for God, not even a stubborn or weary heart.

So before your day begins, pause to meet with the Lord.
Make prayer your top priority.
